How to Winterize Your Boat

Water expands about 9 percent when it freezes, and it doesn't care that it's inside your engine block when it does. Learning how to winterize a boat — or at least understanding what your yard does for the money — is the difference between a quick spring launch and a cracked block that costs more than a season of boating.

Why Winterizing Is Non-Negotiable in Freeze Country

Every system that holds water is a freeze casualty waiting to happen: engine cooling passages, exhaust manifolds, water pumps, livewells, washdowns, freshwater tanks, water heaters, and heads. A single hard overnight freeze can crack a block or manifold, and the damage often hides until the boat is back in the water, taking on water. Timing: winterize after your last realistic outing and before the first hard freeze. In much of the northern US that means October. One warm-week gamble too many is how most freeze claims start.

How to Winterize a Boat Engine

The engine is the expensive part, and the process depends on what's on the transom.

Outboards are the easy case — they're designed to self-drain when vertical:

  1. Stabilize the fuel (details below) and run the engine long enough to get treated fuel through it, flushing with fresh water via muffs or the built-in flush port.
  2. Let the engine drain fully in the tilted-down (vertical) position.
  3. Fog the cylinders with fogging oil per your manual, or for EFI engines follow the manufacturer's storage procedure.
  4. Change the gear lube now, not in spring — milky lube means a leaking seal, and water left in the gearcase over winter can freeze and crack it.
  5. Grease fittings, touch up the prop shaft, and store the engine vertical, never tilted up where water can pool and freeze in the exhaust.

Sterndrives and inboards hold water in the block and manifolds, so they need draining and antifreeze:

  1. Warm the engine, then change the oil and filter — acidic used oil shouldn't sit in an engine all winter.
  2. Drain the cooling system at every drain point (blocks, manifolds, coolers). Rusty drain plugs and forgotten petcocks are the classic failure.
  3. Run non-toxic propylene glycol marine antifreeze (the pink stuff, rated well below your coldest expected temperature) through the raw-water side until it exits the exhaust.
  4. Fog the engine, top off the fuel treatment, and for sterndrives: drain and refill gear lube, grease the fittings, and inspect the bellows while you're there.
  5. Closed-cooling (freshwater-cooled) engines still need their raw-water side treated — only the sealed coolant loop is protected.

Fuel: Stabilize It or Regret It

Gasoline, especially ethanol-blended E10, degrades over a winter — it oxidizes, absorbs water, and can gum injectors and carburetors. The standard practice:

  • Fill the tank to roughly nine-tenths full to limit condensation while leaving room for expansion.
  • Add a marine fuel stabilizer at the labeled dose, then run the engine long enough to pull treated fuel through the whole system.
  • Replace fuel filters and water separators either now or at spring commissioning.

Plumbing, Systems, and Everything Else That Holds Water

  • Freshwater system: drain the tank, bypass the water heater (winterizing a full heater wastes gallons of antifreeze), and pump non-toxic antifreeze through every faucet and shower until it runs pink.
  • Head and holding tank: pump out, flush, and winterize per the head's manual.
  • Raw-water systems: livewells, baitwells, washdowns, air conditioning, and generators all have their own water circuits. Miss one and it will find you in April.
  • Bilge: clean and dry it, and leave drain plugs out with a note on the helm so spring-you remembers.

Batteries, Interior, and the Cover

Remove batteries or leave them aboard on a smart maintainer; either way, they should be fully charged, because a discharged battery freezes far more easily than a charged one. Take everything soft and organic home — cushions, canvas, lines, PFDs, flares, and anything mildew-prone — and prop lockers and the fridge open for airflow. DIY or Pay the Yard?

A first-timer with an outboard, a manual, and an afternoon can genuinely do this. Sterndrives and inboards are less forgiving — one missed drain plug can total an engine — so many owners split the difference: the yard does the engine and systems, the owner handles fuel, batteries, interior, and cover. If you do pay for winterization, ask exactly what's included; "winterize" ranges from engine-only to a full-boat service depending on the shop.

At what temperature do I need to winterize a boat?

Damage risk starts with a hard freeze — sustained hours below about 28°F — but the practical rule is simpler: if your area sees freezing winters at all, winterize fully. Marginal climates get caught by surprise cold snaps every few years.

Can I skip winterizing if my boat is stored indoors?

Only if the storage is reliably heated all winter, and even then most owners stabilize fuel and protect batteries. Unheated indoor storage protects against weather, not temperature.

Do jet skis and PWCs need winterizing?

Yes — same logic, smaller scale: stabilized fuel, water drained from the pump and exhaust, antifreeze where the manufacturer specifies, battery on a maintainer, and a cover.

What does it cost to have a boat winterized professionally?
