Boat Fuel Guide: Types, Costs and Efficiency

Fuel is the ownership cost you control most directly: the same boat can burn double the gallons on the same route depending on how it's loaded, trimmed, and driven. Understanding boat fuel costs — and the ethanol rules that can quietly wreck an engine — pays off every single outing.

Gas or Diesel: What Your Boat Drinks

Gasoline powers the overwhelming majority of recreational boats — outboards, sterndrives, PWCs, and most inboard ski boats. Most marine gas engines are built for regular 87-octane fuel; use higher octane only if your engine manual calls for it, not as a treat.

Diesel dominates in trawlers, larger cruisers, and yachts. Diesels cost more up front but reward you with better fuel economy per mile, huge service life, and lower fire risk. They're happiest running regularly under load — a lightly used diesel is not doing itself any favors.

The engine configuration question — inboard vs outboard — shapes fuel life too: modern four-stroke and direct-injection outboards are dramatically more efficient than the two-strokes of a generation ago, which matters when comparing older used boats against newer ones.

Ethanol: The E10 Rule and the E15 Trap

Most US pump gasoline is E10 — 10 percent ethanol — and marine engines are built to tolerate it. But ethanol is hygroscopic: it pulls water out of the air, and in a boat tank that breathes humid marina air for weeks, that can lead to phase separation — a corrosive water-ethanol layer at the bottom of your tank that engines hate.

The rules that keep gas engines healthy:

  • Never use E15. Gas station pumps increasingly offer 15 percent ethanol blends (often labeled E15 or "Unleaded 88"). It is illegal and warranty-voiding to use E15 in marine engines — it damages fuel systems designed for E10. Read the pump label every time you fill cans at a roadside station.
  • Buy fresh fuel from busy sources. Ethanol-related problems grow with fuel age.

  • Keep a quality water-separating fuel filter and change it on schedule, per the annual maintenance checklist.
  • Ethanol-free gas (sold at many marinas and some stations, often labeled REC-90) is excellent for boats that sit between uses, worth its premium for small engines and long storage.

What Boat Fuel Costs

Two structural facts set marine fuel apart from road fuel:

  1. Marina fuel carries a premium. On-water fuel docks routinely charge meaningfully more per gallon than roadside stations — the convenience, dock infrastructure, and low volume are all in the price. Trailer boaters who fill up on the road save on every tank; big-boat owners mostly pay the dock price.
  2. Consumption, not price per gallon, drives the bill. A useful planning rule of thumb: at wide-open throttle, a gasoline engine burns very roughly one gallon per hour for every 10 horsepower, and diesels meaningfully less for the same power. So a 250 hp outboard flat out burns on the order of 25 gallons per hour — but throttled back to a sensible cruise, that can drop to a third or half of the wide-open number. Your real-world bill depends almost entirely on hours run and throttle discipline.

How to Burn Less Fuel

  • Find your sweet spot. Most planing hulls have an efficient cruise — typically a comfortable fast-idle-on-plane rather than full throttle. If you have a fuel-flow gauge, find the speed that maximizes miles per gallon and live there.
  • Trim matters enormously. Bow plowing wastes fuel; over-trimmed porpoising wastes fuel. Learn your boat's clean, level running attitude.
  • Lighten the load. Water is 8.3 pounds a gallon and gas about 6 — half-empty tanks on a short day, emptied ballast, and de-cluttered lockers all show up in burn rate.
  • Keep the bottom and prop clean. A fouled hull or dinged prop can cost a noticeable slice of your economy. Check the prop for damage and the hull for growth regularly.
  • Maintain the engine. Fresh filters, healthy plugs, and correct prop pitch keep the engine at its designed efficiency.
  • Plan routes and idle less. Time spent idling at no-wake speeds still burns fuel; efficient trips cluster destinations.

Fuel System Care and Safety

Gasoline vapor in a bilge is the most dangerous thing in recreational boating. Habits that keep fueling boring: fill portable tanks ashore, off the boat; run the blower for a full four minutes and do a sniff test before starting any gas inboard or sterndrive; don't top off to the brim — fuel expands in the heat and vents overboard; and keep the nozzle in contact with the fill to avoid static. Diesel skips the explosive vapor but adds its own housekeeping: microbial growth ("diesel bug") in tanks that sit, managed with biocide treatment and full winter tanks.

Old fuel questions come up constantly with used boats: gasoline more than a few months old (unstabilized) is suspect, and a tank of stale fuel plus varnished carburetors is a common surprise on barn-find boats — one more thing to check during a sea trial.

Can I use regular car gas in my boat?

Yes, if it's E10 or ethanol-free and the octane your manual specifies. The fuel is the same chemistry that cars burn — the discipline is avoiding E15 and managing fuel age.

How many gallons per hour does a boat use?

At full throttle, roughly one gallon per hour per 10 hp for gas engines as a rule of thumb — so 150 hp burns around 15 gph flat out, far less at cruise. Diesels burn meaningfully less for equivalent work.

Is ethanol-free gas worth the extra cost?

For boats used weekly, E10 with a stabilizer habit is fine. For boats that sit — and for small carbureted engines — ethanol-free fuel prevents the most common fuel problems and is usually worth the premium.
